In 1992 a group of women at California State University, Fresno organized with the specific purpose of creating a unique organization that promoted multiculturalism, community service, and education. The catalyst for their concern was the lack of unity amongst women of color on their campus and the need for a group that embraced the differences among them. The women envisioned a multicultural group that would bridge the gap of varying races, cultures, and ethnicities. That year, the Alpha chapter at Fresno state elected as their first president Dina Olivares, who was instrumental in voicing the intrinsic worth of this type of sisterhood. Her vision of the future of SAZ is what SAZ represents today; having become a reality by the women who continue to support and represent the organization.
We are grateful to all of our founding members particularly to Angelina Garcia, Susana Montanez, Maricia Alvarado, Patricia Betancourt, and many other sisters, who remain active and vociferous members of the sorority for having the foresight to begin this great sisterhood, and for laying down the foundation for every sister to enjoy today.
